What these figures can tell you
The table uses the ABS Survey of Income and Housing, 2019–20. Households are grouped by the age of their reference person; these are household averages, not individual balances or age-specific medians. The survey covers private dwellings and excludes very remote areas. Use this historical context alongside your own dated records, not as a target or a current valuation.
Is this current Australian household wealth data?
The table uses the 2019–20 ABS Household Income and Wealth release, not a 2026 estimate. At the review date, the ABS latest-release page still identifies 2019–20 and lists the next release as unknown. Keep the reference period beside any figure you quote.
Should I compare myself with the mean or median?
The mean adds household wealth and divides by the number of households. The median is the middle household when households are ordered by wealth. Large holdings can pull the mean above the median. For 2019–20, the ABS reported mean household net worth of A$1,042,000 and median household net worth of A$579,200.
What can a household benchmark tell me about my own position?
It provides context, not a target or personal assessment. Match the household scope and definition before comparing. Differences in household composition, age grouping, valuation date and access to assets limit the comparison. Build your own dated snapshot with the net worth calculator before drawing conclusions.
